A calmer kind
of classroom.

Equine facilitated learning for children and young people aged 5 to 16, in Worton near Devizes and Melksham.

Our sessions suit young people who find it hard to thrive in a traditional classroom setting.

That includes many children with special educational needs, such as autism (ASC), ADHD, specific learning difficulties (SpLD) and other social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs.

Our sessions

As learners build confidence around our ponies, I gently help them find their voice.

Through speaking and listening, in line with the English National Curriculum, learners develop their verbal literacy and communication skills. That growing confidence links to every area of learning, helping them to self-regulate and bringing a sense of calm and wellbeing.

How confidence builds

Learners go at their own pace, getting to know the ponies a step at a time.

  1. Feeding

A first, gentle way to meet the ponies and learn to read how they respond.

  2. Grooming

Calm, hands-on time that invites conversation and careful listening.

  3. Leading

Leading a pony by themselves, a real moment of trust and pride.

  4. Talking about it

Putting the experience into words, building vocabulary and communication.

Clare, founder of Stable Journeys, with a pony

It’s so rewarding to see how much children enjoy being with the ponies, and the confidence they gain from learning to handle them.

About me

I’m Clare, a qualified English teacher with experience in both mainstream and specialist schools. I’ve also had a lifelong passion for horses, and have been lucky enough to own and ride them since I was a young child.

I still spend part of my week teaching in school, so I see first-hand how challenging the classroom can be for some learners. That knowledge, combined with my love of horses, is what led me to start Stable Journeys.

Proud, relaxed and buzzing

What pupils, parents and schools say about their time with us.

Our learner came away from the sessions feeling proud and positive. It was especially lovely to see him develop patience and empathy around the animals.

Clare was incredibly patient and welcoming. She had a natural ability to explain things in a way my child easily understood, and he came away buzzing.

The ponies were so cute. They loved being groomed and I felt so proud of myself for leading Indy around by myself.

Being around the ponies is much better than going to school. I really liked grooming Indy and Dora. I felt really relaxed around them.
